Information on Oread Friends Meeting (Quaker)

Update this information

Oread Friends Meeting is one of two Quaker fellowships in Lawrence. We are an unprogrammed meeting affiliated with the Friends General Conference. Visitors are very welcome. In our Meeting for Worship, attenders gather in silence as a congregation. Out of the silence a message may arise, expressed either by a desire in someone to speak their thoughts or, more simply, by a common concern. Quakers believe that the same Spirit, or Inner Light, that inspired holy scriptures and sacred thought throughout history is able to work in the lives of individuals today. In the tradition of the Religious Society of Friends over the last 300 years, Oread Friends have many concerns for the betterment of society, including conscientious objection to war, the use of appropriate technology, and the protection of the civil and cultural rights of every human being. Oread Friends Meeting provides a venue for unprogrammed Quaker worship every Sunday. The Meeting also hosts occasional speakers, worship-study groups and informal social activities. We are active in community organizations such as the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutritional Kitchen (LINK) and the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice.
