More Than Houses

Habitat seeks to build lives as well as houses. Through the houses we build, hope is restored and lives are changed as the cycle of need is broken.

How we build is just as important as what we build. Habitat is not a give-away program. Our homes are built in partnership with the homeowners. They must make a $500 down payment and contribute 375 hours of "sweat equity" labor, working on their home and other Lawrence Habitat homes. By investing themselves in the building process, homeowners gain self-reliance, self-esteem and new skills. Their down payments and monthly mortgage payment go into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" that is used to help build more homes.

The most visible benefit to the community is the physical change that takes place in the neighborhood when Habitat homes are built. Run-down and abandoned houses are replaced by neat, new homes surrounded by well kept yards where happy families play.

Less visible is the economic impact of a Habitat neighborhood. Each time a family moves out of subsidized public housing, tax dollars are saved. Further benefits are derived as the new homeowners begin to pay real estate taxes and property values begin to climb.
