January 14 & 15 Tony Munoz

"One Male's View of the Quilting World" Tony Munoz, a retired elementary school teacher from Parsons, KS will present "One Male's View of the Quilting World" at our meetings on January 14th and 15th. He is a Charter Member of The Quilter's Guild of Parsons, KS, and Kansas Quilters Organization. He has many years of quilt making experience and loves to teach. Tony's workshops are fun and easy. He comes highly recommended to us as being a very entertaining speaker, and we are looking forward to a good time, as we will be helping him celebrate his birthday!

Tony loves chocolate so be sure to bring chocolate to the workshop on Tuesday, January 15th. Tony will teach a "Twisted Log Cabin" workshop at the church from 1:00 PM to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $18. Tony designed his twisted log cabin blocks to look like a tornado. The design possibilities for these versatile blocks are limited only by your imagination! March 17 & 18 Mindy Smith Workshop

Acclaimed quilter to speak and teach!

Locally known quilt artist and "free-motion" quilting teacher Mindy Smith will be the featured speaker at the March meeting of the Kaw Valley Quilters’ Guild.

She will speak on “Documenting Your Quilts Your Way” at 7 p.m. Monday, 17 March and on “Discovering Your Creative Power” at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, 18 March in the meeting room at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vermont, in Lawrence, Kansas. The Lectures are free and open to members and quests.

Smith will conduct a workshop at the church on Tuesday, 18 March from 1:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. on “Thread Painting”. Costs are $25.00 for members and $30.00 for non-members. Register by calling Jerrye Van Leer at 785-843-8421 or quiltcards@yahoo.com or Joyce Wolf at 785-887-6019 or rjjawolf@sunflower.com.

Smith creates quilts, but she doesn’t use traditional patterns you’ve seen on your great-grandmother’s bed. Instead, Smith uses an organic, free-flowing process to create pieces of art. Her thread-painting requires the same process as painting with a brush and oils. It’s a layering process of lights and darks. She can do everything from outlines to sewing what looks like charcoal sketching. She found her niche, when she discovered she could paint with fabric and thread.
